Should we be teaching our newest generation of learners how to use technology more? Anyone with young children will know that using technology is natural for our youngest generation. The internet is now a key resource for children’s homework, gone are the days they would trek down to the local library and research through hundreds of books. Now they just ‘Google It’. How are we preparing our children in research skills to decipher fact from opinion? A recent article in The Guardian, UK, leaked a report about teaching children about Twitter and Wikipedia. This will undoubtedly cause a stir amongst our educators and parents.
But discussion is good because it means we are questioning whether we are doing the right thing for our children to equip them with the skills they will need in their everyday life. I believe that we should be using the technology that is available to engage our youngest generation of learners. We are preparing our children today for jobs that do not even exist yet. But one thing is for sure they will be using technology in their everyday life.
